This past fall I went to Gloucester with my good friend and amazing photographer Renard and his fiance Lu for their engagement photos. I visited the castle years ago when I was in Gloucester for a family reunion, and I knew I had to bring them here! An epic couple needs an epic location after all! I could ramble on and on about how amazing these two are, but I’d never do them justice. I also have to thank our two assistants Zach and my daughter Stephanie for all their help and entertainment I can’t wait for their wedding!!

Keith Urban, Maren Morris and Brett Eldredge at Mohegan Sun Arena

This past Friday, my friend Sherry took me with her to see Keith Urban at the Mohegan Sun Arena, and it was AMAZING!!!! This is the second time I’ve seen him, and it just keeps getting better. And if just seeing him wasn’t enough, Sherry got to go up on stage with him, and she KILLED it! He tried on her shirt and then wore it the whole rest of the concert. It was so freakin’ cool! And, the girl standing next to Sherry happened to be wearing the exact same shirt (before she put the umpire shirt on) and she went on stage too! That Maren Morris and Brett Eldredge opened for him was just icing on the cake. It was an incredible experience, and I think I’m officially a KU groupie. His fans are just as amazing as he is, and I’ve made so many fantastic new friends just from going to see him. It’s like a big crazy family! Griswold High's Production of Jesus Christ Superstar

Yesterday I had the incredible pleasure of seeing the Griswold High production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and I was absolutely blown away! These kids were amazing! If I didn't already know I would have definitely thought this was a professional production. They moved me to tears over and over. I don't know most of them, but I'm so incredibly proud of all of them. El Johnson I love you so much! You were fantastic, and my heart still swells thinking about seeing you up there ♥

Holy Land USA Waterbury CT

Since tomorrow is Palm Sunday I decided it would be a good time to take a ride up to Holy Land USA in Waterbury, CT. The last time (and first time) I came here was over 10 years ago, and it was already in a terrible state of disrepair. I'll have to dig up the few pictures I took from that trip (just prints from a film point and shoot lol). It definitely looks much worse now than I remember it being then. I have some vague memories of headless camels that were completely absent this time. Overall though it is a miracle that it's even still here at all 10+ years is a whole lot of time for vandals and the weather to do their worst. To me it was fascinating, as a photographer and lover of all things abandoned, and also sad that nothing could be done to save this quirky little place that seemed to be so lovingly made as a fun tribute to God. There is a bright side though. A few years ago a brand new cross was erected on the peak (with the help of my friend Dave and his Industrial Riggers) so at least a part of Holy Land shines brightly every night in all different colors depending on the season ♥

If you go, don't be an idiot and go alone like I did (Lots of people told me how dumb that was and I should have know myself. I think I lack the risk aversion gene.) Waterbury can be a rough place, and abandoned places by nature tend to also be rough places. Also please be respectful. Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints.

David Cook with Tony Lucca Digital Vein 2016 Fairfield CT

On Sunday night I got a chance to see David Cook live for the first time, and he did not disappoint! First of all his voice was insane and each song was better than the one before it! In addition to being an amazing performer, he was also both an excellent showman making everyone feel like he was talking right to them, and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy; human and humble, poking fun at himself. That's a fantastic combination in my book and just made me like him all the more! Tony Lucca, his opening act and veteran of The Voice (Go Team Adam!) and Mickey Mouse Club (in the days of MMC - Rock the house!) was also and incredible performer in his own right! He made just his voice and one guitar fill the room, which as a performer myself, I know is not an easy thing to do!

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing (and listening to) the incredible Brendan James with the equally amazing Lee Sylvestre in a private show at The Delamar in Southport, CT. He's from South Carolina (where I grew up), but this was my first time hearing him. I was equally mesmerized, impressed and inspired. And ask him to tell you his Carly Simon story! The two of them are truly the sweetest couple you could ever meet, and they wear their love for each other all over their faces. Their family and friends are all such great people too! You couldn't ask for a better group, and I'm super excited that I'll be able to see them all again for Matt's sister's wedding next year!

Jordan's Furniture New Haven Grand Opening

I saw some TV ads for the grand opening of Jordan's Furniture in New Haven CT with what's being called the largest indoor adventure ropes course in the country. Since it wasn't far from where I live I decided to check it out. I got there about five minutes before it opened, and as expected the main parking lot was full and there was a line all the way down the sidewalk and around the corner. By the time I was done taking pictures of the outside of the building, the line was about half as short and moving fast! Every person who walked through the line shook the hand of the owner and then walked through a gauntlet of store employees clapping and cheering. It was actually pretty neat!

I of course went straight for the ropes course (complete with ice cream and a pizza restaurant) as soon as I walked in, and I wasn't disappointed! The ropes course looked amazing though I didn't go on it. My daughter would have killed me if I went without her. There were also separate challenges for younger kids. The water feature was amazing as well with it's colored lights and geysers that were synced to the music filling the giant room.

After that I walked around the huge labyrinthine store. Some sections were very disorienting, and I was sureI was going to get lost but I was always spit right back out onto the main thoroughfare. Everything was very nice and styled in an interesting way like the kitchen/dining area where the walls were completely covered in pallets. There were definitely a few things I was drooling over, like the rocking bed, the movie/studio style floor lamps, the cool shoe mold mirror and a funky multicolored couch. All in all it's a great place with a lot to offer! I'd highly recommend a visit!

Gorgeous LGBTQ Wedding in Provincetown on Cape Cod

Sherry and Susan were married in a sweet little beach ceremony in Provincetown MA and had their gorgeous reception at the very hip Harbor Hotel!

From the intimate and moving ceremony to the beautiful beach themed decorations, ever detail was perfection! My favorite moment of the day was their first look! Sherry had been telling Sue that she was going to wear a pantsuit, so when she surprised her with in a dress at the first look, the expression on Sue's face was so shocked and overjoyed and just beyond description. It was one of those unforgettable moments for me, and I'm just so glad they asked me to share their day with them!

PS - The next time I do a Provincetown wedding, I want to do a trash the dress the day after - walking out on the Jetty to the lighthouse and then jumping into the ocean! Who's game?!

Chasing Charming by the Griswold High School Drama Club

Magical Farm Wedding at The Kaaterskill in Catskill NY

I've know Jaclyn's family for a long time, and I love each and every one of them, so I was so excited when they asked me to shoot their wedding! The fact that it was at The Kaaterskill, a farm in the Catskills was just icing on the cake! The day started off beautiful, and the rain held off just long enough to make it through the ceremony, and the little cocktail hour thunderstorm gave way to the most beautiful rainbow, which just made it that much more perfect. Jaclyn and Frank are two of the most grounded people I've ever met. They are so Zen and spiritual and attuned to the world around them, but they also know how to let loose and have fun. They are both just beautiful people inside and out, and I couldn't imagine a better match. I can't wait to see the world through their eyes as they travel every inch of it together! Wishing you guys all the happiness in the world and then some!

Vibrant Houston TX Hindu Indian Wedding

Priyam and Pat are a smart and adorable Boston couple who were married in a vibrant and gorgeous 3 day celebration in Houston Texas, where Priyam's family lives. I photographed the weddings of two of their friends in Boston, and I'm so glad they asked me to shoot theirs. I love getting to know the whole gang and their families! Priyam and Pat are both the sweetest, funniest, most energetic beautiful and loving people! It's so much fun just watching them interact with each other. They will never have a dull moment in their marriage!

The first day was the Mehndi party where guests had henna designs put on their hands (me too!), while people danced, ate delicious food and spent quality time catching up!

Pat is searching for his initials in Priyam's Mehndi.

Day 2 was the Vidhi, which includes the Pithi, a special paste that is spread on the bride and groom which, among other things, softens the skin and makes it glow for their wedding.

Day 3 was the Wedding or Shaadi and Reception!
The Wedding begins with the Baraat, the groom's wedding procession. During the ceremony, the bridesmaids steal the grooms shoes, and he has to pay them to get his shoes back. What you see here is a lot of wheeling and dealing! After a break for lunch and a few hours rest, it was party time at the unparalleled Wyndham Houston West Energy Corridor!

Beautiful Early Summer Waveny House Wedding in New Canaan CT

Angela and Corey were married in a gorgeous early summer ceremony in the Walled Garden at the stately Waveny House in New Canaan, CT; complete with cornhole, vintage polaroids and the liveliest grandparents I've ever seen! They both teach in urban schools in NYC, and judging by they way they interacted with my 3rd grader when we first met in the fall, they are amazing at what they do! I've come close to crying at many weddings but during one of the speeches at this wedding I was completely moved to tears. When you watch them together, for that moment, everything seems right in the world.

Soupstock 2015 in Shelton CT

Soupstock 2015 (a fundraiser for the Mary A Schmecker Turtle Shell Fund) is this weekend! So of course I, like everyone else in the loooooong line to get in, looked at the weather and decided to go today because it wasn't supposed to really start raining until around 5pm. Well, in true Woodstock spirit it poured today, but only after we all waited in line to get in. But, you know what, it was totally worth it!! We stuck it out with tons of other people for almost 4 hours, and it was great for the whole family. Even our 4 year olds had a blast today! Great music! Great food (especially the soups of course)! And great art (especially my and my daughter's entries of course)! Start scrolling to see the day in pictures! And make sure you go tomorrow, because rain or shine, you're guaranteed to have an incredible time!

I saw this cool green fan just sitting there in a hole in a wall in one of the cool old factory buildings on the walk down from where we parked. We had to park a long way out, but the scenery is cool so you won't mind a bit!

Stunning Spring Wedding at Woodwinds in Branford CT

Manny and Michelle were married on a perfect spring day in late April. These two are just adorable together, and they are beautiful human beings inside and out. Their ceremony was at the exquisite St. Theresa's in Trumbull, CT. The mass was elegant and moving and the church was just amazing! Their reception was at Woodwinds in Branford. I personally love Woodwinds because not only is it a beautiful venue, but they treat everyone so incredibly well including their vendors! The highlight of the night was when Manny's son gave his own toast to the bride and groom. He was sweet and funny and so well-spoken, and there wasn't a dry-eye in the room by the time he was done. The cake cutting came in close second. These two just went for it! They smashed cake in each other's faces and were laughing like kids having a food fight. You could just tell that they have so much fun together! After that it was time to party and boy do they know how to party. These guys have got some moves! Just wow! It's easy to see that their love runs deep and burns hot! If you see them dance together, you'll know what I'm talking about. It was such an honor and a pleasure to be a part of their special day, and I wish them nothing but success and happiness! Oh and PS, if you need a mortgage, Manny is your guy!

Taylor and Marsh were married at the gorgeous Waveny House in New Canaan, CT on April 18th, 2015 - The first perfect spring day of the year. Last night I had the pleasure of attending my niece's high school production of Footloose. I know, I know you're thinking, a high school musical... groan... But these guys were FANTASTIC! I'm a broadway musical snob, and I loved it! I was very impressed! Newport RI Fort Adams Engagement Session

It was a beautiful but chilly day at the end of March when we shot Priyam and Pat's engagement session. We met at the incredible Fort Adams in Newport RI, and it was a total blast. New York City Engagement Session at Grand Central and Central Park!

I met up with Lea and Matt at Grand Central at 9 am on a chilly March morning to start their engagement session, and first of all, holy gorgeous! Both of them! Lea has the best hair I've ever seen (which may or may not have something to do with her association with Panache, in Shelton), and my 8 year old thinks Matt is the spitting image of Nick Jonas! So yeah, suffice it to say that it was easy to take gorgeous photos of them. We started off in the iconic Grand Central Terminal where we caught the last rays of morning sun through the big windows. Our next stop was Bryant Park and the beautiful New York Public Library. Then, we made our way to Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, and finally, went to lunch at the very cool and very delicious Kingside Restaurant on West 57th Street! It was a whirlwind of a day, and a photographer's dream - a super fun couple in some amazing locations!

Amazing Wedding Venue Oheka Castle!

Last weekend, my husband and I spent a night at Oheka Castle in Long Island to celebrate our anniversary, and wow! Even in the snow this place was just stunning! I got up at dawn (I know crazy right!) to watch the sunrise and explore the castle and grounds. Every bit of it was so gorgeous, I couldn't help but fantasize where the wedding ceremony would be and where I'd put the bride and groom for their kickass portraits! Greenwich CT Wedding at the Riverside Yacht Club

Aran + Jeff had a beautiful late fall wedding in Greenwich, CT at the Riverside Yacht Club. What started as a rainy and gray morning cleared to a stunning sunset! The ceremony ended up being inside, but the inside of the Yacht Club is so gorgeous that absolutely nothing was lost. It was a small, intimate and perfect wedding. Everyone one there loved these guys so much, the room vibrated with it, and I laughed and cried right along with them. Aran is a police officer, so the night ended with them being handcuffed together and taken on out on a one of a kind Greenwich Police Harbor tour!

Exploring Ponemah Mills in Taftville CT

If you know me, you know that I like nothing better than urban exploring, the more dilapidated the better! So I was thrilled that my mom wanted to take me down to the old mill in Taftville the day after Christmas. She's a photographer too, and she loves exploring hidden places as much as I do!

Ponemah Mills opened in 1871 and was at one time one of the largest textile mills in the country! They've started renovating it (there were actually people working in one of the back rooms while we were looking around) and by late 2016 it will be filled with condos. It's so nice to see that they aren't going to tear it down, but I'm glad I got to go in and check it out before it was all redone!

Solo Reflector Tips!

I love shooting outdoors, especially beautiful and interesting places like Prospect Park, Central Park, Harkness Park, etc... I think that natural light is definitely the most beautiful, and I love using a reflector to add light and life to the face and nice catchlights in the eyes, but I often shoot solo, and it can be tricky to juggle a reflector or off camera light and a light stand on my own. I've smashed my umbrella many many times and broken more pc sync brackets than I can count, and I've even had a reflector fly away never to be found again!

So, I just got a new reflector in the mail this past week. It is a 32" round 5 in 1 with a handle on each side, which is great for attaching the reflector to things. After some experimentation, I came up with an effective way to carry and use the reflector on the go when shooting alone!

The first way, and the easiest I think, is to use a big carabiner and clip it to one of the loops on your camera backpack (I have the Kata 3n1-33). Then you put your backpack on the ground and adjust the reflector until you get the right angle (A tent stake on the other handle would make it even more secure once you get it set.) Because I have so much gear in my bag, I had no problems with the wind blowing it away. And when it's time to move on, throw your backpack back on (keeping the reflector attached) and head to the next location. Easy peasy! Below are a few images taken with that setup and also pull-back shots to show how it was done. Check out those catchlights! Her face had nice light even while wearing a hat and a hood!

If you don't use a backpack, you can also use a roller bag! I attached the reflector to the top of the extended handle with a clamp, and hung a mini light stand (small enough to stow right in the bag) from the handle with a bungee cord so that I could adjust the angle of the reflector. The nice thing is that since your bag probably has some weight to it, you probably won't have to worry too much about it blowing away or blowing down, and when you're done, just grab your bag and move to the next location! Below are examples of that setup as well.

Waterview Wedding in Monroe, CT with Twilight Breaking Dawn Details

Tammy and Michael were married on September 27th, 2014 at the beautiful Waterview in Monroe, CT. They had a classic black and white wedding influenced by the wedding in the movie Twilight Breaking Dawn. She even wore the exact same amazing Manolo Blahnik shoes (in black). Despite being at the end of September, it was HOT, but everyone forgot about the temperature the moment Tammy walked down the aisle. These two are beautiful inside and out and so in love. Poorvi and Vikram were married on July 7th 2014. Their ceremony and reception were at the gorgeous Boston Marriott. Her dresses were so stunning! Everything was so colorful! I loved all of the rituals and details in their beautiful Hindu ceremony. Poorvi is in a Bollywood dance group, so you can bet their first dance was out of this world! The other performances were amazing too, and DJ Bunty rocked it the rest of the night!

Ashley and Kurt were married on June 28th, 2014 in a sweet ocean front ceremony in Vero Beach Florida. Their Ceremony and reception were at the Vero Beach Hotel and Spa on Jaycee Beach in Vero Beach FL. They are both so sweet and welcoming and just overall amazing people. Ashley is actually a former pro softball player! This girl rocks! Her family is just as amazing and talented. Every part of the wedding was handmade, from the flower girl dresses to the cake to the floral arrangements by her mom and her sister!

The first day was the rehearsal, and with all those adorable kids to wrangle it was crazy and fun and silly and an all around great afternoon!

It was a day wedding, so we got started reaaally early, but it was worth it to see this spectacular sunrise right off their balcony!

Jocelyn and Alex were married on May 2, 2014. They had a gorgeous beachside ceremony at Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe in Punta Cana Dominican Republic. And the next day they did a sunrise(ish) Trash the Dress (to follow in a separate post). I had so much fun hanging out with them, I didn't want to leave!

Baby Brielle's Newborn Session

This session with little Brielle was my very first newborn session - I think I was putting it off because my twins were so difficult as babies that they gave me PTSD :-) - and I'm so glad it was with this little one. She barely slept, because she didn't want to miss anything, but she was such a sweet little munchkin!

Gorgeous Wedding on the Jersey Shore

Laura and Nico were married on April 27th, 2014 in Belmar, NJ. They had a gorgeous beach ceremony not far from Asbury Park, and a beautiful reception at Doolan's Shore Club in Spring Lake Heights. They live in North Carolina where Nico serves in the Marines, but they came back to NJ to celebrate their marriage with their family and friends.

They all got ready in their rooms at Doolan's Shore Club.

The anklet Laura wore was a gift from Egypt that her father gave her mother when they were young. When they were ready, everyone met in the gorgeous lobby before heading down to the beach. All of the guys wore special socks (you'll see them later), but I liked this little man's socks the best!

The day could not have been more perfect! This is a good example of why you might want to upgrade to a second photographer. Sometimes it's nice to get the first kiss from behind so that all of their family can be in the picture, but although we spoke with the officiant about moving over at the kiss before the ceremony, he must have forgotten. Things don't always happen exactly as planned (That's what makes it exciting right!), but a second photographer could have gotten an alternate view from the other side. I've never seen this before, but what a perfect beachy exit! Then it was back to Doolan's for their sweet and fun reception! The socks! Congratulations Laura and Nico! And best wishes for a long and happy life together.

Beautiful Boston North End Italian Wedding

Christine and Denis were married on April 25th, 2014 at Sacred Heart Italian Church in Boston's North End. It was a beautiful, fun, and unique day that started in the sky, then went down to cobbled streets, set sail into the Boston Harbor, and ended with a gorgeous city view! It was so easy to see the love these two share just in the smiles on their faces and the softness in their eyes when they looked at each other.

The ladies got ready in a rooftop solarium overlooking the city of Boston and the Boston Harbor. What a spectacular view. It was an amazing feeling having a bird's eye view of Boston like that. The building there in the distance is the Boston Hyatt where the reception was held.

The guys got ready back at the Boston Harbor Hyatt. They looked like they had a pretty good time too!

When they were ready to go, they took a water taxi to the ceremony!

Since you can't park in the North End (not kidding about that even a little!), everyone walked to the church.

After the ceremony, everyone walked back to the harbor and boarded the Majesty Boston Harbor Cruise boat for cocktail hour. Being out in the Boston Harbor for sunset is a magical experience!

The reception was at the beautiful Hyatt Boston Harbor with panoramic views of the city from the ballroom.

Party time!!

Society Room Wedding in Hartford CT

Sarah and Tim were married on October 12th, 2013 in Hartford CT at the amazing Society Room. This also happened to be the day of the Hartford Marathon! Despite the barricades and police cars at every intersection, somehow everyone made it to see this beautiful couple walk down the aisle. Everything about their wedding was beautiful and unique just like them. And, because Tim's family is Turkish, the men did a traditional Turkish dance! After the reception, they decided to brave downtown Hartford for some pictures at Bushnell Park, marathon ground zero. There were trucks and workers everywhere, but the park was still beautiful and the carousel was even open! All and all it turned out to be a beautiful wedding at an amazing location on the perfect day!

Last summer I was blessed with the opportunity to photograph Roxy and Bobby's wedding. Roxy is the daughter of my former landlords. My little family lived above them for about seven years. Through my wedding, the birth of my first child and four years later the birth of my twins, so it was very special to be able to photograph this wedding.

Roxy and Bobby met at Vassar College, and they decided that this is where they wanted to get married. They actually had two weddings. One, very small and intimate, under the big Sycamore tree in the center of campus where they used to spend time together, and the other larger celebration ceremony in the gorgeous chapel. Their Reception was at the beautiful Locust Grove, also in Poughkeepsie, NY. From the flowers to the place settings, all of it was designed and coordinated by the incredible Rachel Brenha!

I decided to do something different for this wedding and do the entire blog post in black and white. I just like how it made the intimate moments feel more intimate somehow.

Arcade Fire at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport CT

This past Tuesday I got the chance to photograph the Arcade Fire Concert at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport CT. What a night!! It was unlike any concert I've been to before. It started even before it started with a Mariachi band welcoming concertgoers at the door and then parading around the concourse.

The opening act was a DJ dance party featuring Kid Koala and Dan Deacon!

Then Arcade Fire took the stage, and they did not disappoint!

At the end of the night, they fired the confetti cannons! What a perfect end to a crazy cool night!

Visiting the American Museum of Natural History

Last weekend while on a shoot in New York City, I had a few hours to kill, so I used the time to visit the American Museum of Natural History. I haven't been there since the fifth grade when I took a train up to New York from Charleston SC with 40 other classmates. I remember loving it but not much else. That was more years ago than I'd care to disclose!

It was an amazing visit. The enormity of this place is beyond words. There was an entire floor I didn't get to see, because there is just so much awesomenss! From butterflies to dinosaurs and even an exhibit about the Eastern Woodlands Native Americans - my people! I can't wait to go back and visit with my kids!

Wedding at Waveny House in New Canaan CT

Jack and Liz were married on June 15th, 2013 at Waveny House in New Canaan CT. They both live in Los Angeles, but they grew up in CT. Liz's family is Danish, and they incorporated some neat traditions in their ceremony and reception. Jack works on visual effects in the movies. He even has his own IMDB page. Check it out! His groomsmen also work in Hollywood, and his best man worked on the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies! I was in Heaven. These are my people! They are such a beautiful and fun couple and their wedding was gorgeous and had so many little creative touches!

The day started out at 123 Cherry Street Salon in New Canaan.

The next stop was the Benefit Cosmetics Store in Westport for more beautification!

Then it was time to get dressed, so everyone headed to the Waveny House in New Canaan.

Outside on the lawn, the guests were starting to arrive. It's almost time!

Here comes the bride!

Just married!

Liz's mom introduced the Danish family members and they all came up to sing a song with the bride and groom. They distributed scrolls with the lyrics so the guests could sing along.

Spooky! They were channeling The Shining.

They had a very exciting honeymoon too!

Engagement Session at Harkness Park, Waterford CT

We had Kristy and Chris's engagement session at Harkness Memorial Park in Waterford CT. That location has everything - a beautiful white sand beach, gorgeous wetlands, a huge old mansion and a maze of Victorian gardens! Kristy and Chris are one of the most fun (and good looking) couples I've worked with! It feels like I've known Kristy forever, in fact we're sorority sisters, and I couldn't imagine a better person for her than Chris. He's so sweet and easy going, and as you can tell by the pictures, they make each other so happy! That kind of happiness is contagious, and just being around them made me so happy too! I can't wait to photograph their wedding!

John Mayer and Philip Phillips at the Webster Bank Arena

Just one month after getting a press pass to Elton John, I got the amazing opportunity to photograph John Mayer and his opening act Philip Phillips in concert at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, CT. Have I said I love photographing bands? Because I LOVE photographing bands! Especially when John Mayer's in it! It was Christmas time, and we were in his hometown, so he seemed very connected. He thanked everyone for supporting him all these years and talked a little bit about the neighborhoods he used to ride his bike in and where he grew up, and of course he sang and performed incredibly, and I got to walk past Katy Perry! It was just an amazing night, and I'm so grateful to have been a part of it.

Elton John at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport CT

On Friday November 8th, I had the opportunity to photograph Elton John in concert at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT. It was so amazing! I'm still pinching myself! His opening act was an incredible pair of cellists called 2CELLOS who played a few songs on their own and continued to play with him throughout the night. His 4 lady singers (two of whom are Stones as in Sly and the Family Stone) were just crazy good too! Sir Elton was 110% that night. Every song was better than the next, his voice was as powerful and flawless as ever, and he was so gracious to his fans. It's no wonder why he's stood the test of time. He's definitely in a class of his own.

Shelton CT Sports Center Hockey and Pumpkin Farm Engagement Session

Alicia and Kevin are getting married! They had their fall engagement session a few weeks ago here in Shelton, CT, and we couldn't have asked for a better day!

Kevin is a hockey fan and also plays Hockey, so we started off the session at The Rinks at Shelton, part of the complex at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

Next, we headed up 108 towards Huntington Center for a few quick shots at the Pine Lake trail.

After that, we were lucky enough to get in a few shots at Pumpkinseed Hill, part of Jones Family Farms. It was chilly but fun!

Our last stop was right down the road at a my friend's farm. The view from there is amazing, and the sun was just starting to set when we got there.

It was a beautiful fall day with a stunning (and fun!!) couple at some fantastic locations! It doesn't get better than that!

NYC Brooklyn Bridge Park and reBar LGBT Wedding

Mike and Garth were married at Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, NY in front of the carousel on October 5th 2013. It was one of the most moving and beautiful weddings I've had the pleasure to attend. They were so much fun to photograph - funny, super nice and as you can see they are both easy on the eyes! Their families and friends are amazing too.

I met up with the guys in the morning at the carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and while their families and friends started setting up, we took a walk around DUMBO to get some pre-wedding shots.

A boat out in the East River had this amazing multicolored sail that made a very cool background!

We stumbled upon this brightly painted bodega and had to stop!

Heading back to the carousel for the ceremony!

The ceremony was beautiful and had some awesome traditions I'd never seen before like the Polaroid ritual! They couple takes a picture of each other right after they say their vows, and then they keep the pictures somewhere special as a reminder through the years of those vows.

The ceremony ended with a spin around Jane's Carousel to the sounds of a Zydeco Band!

Mike and Garth then led the guests in a Zydeco Parade through DUMBO to reBar, where they had their reception.

At reBar, they started off with a little down time in the lounge.

And then they got to hang out on the roof! What a view!

The first dance, mom dances and speeches came next.

Later, they took a break and did some family group photos in reBar's reRun Theater.

The cake and favors were delicious!

And the party!

After the ceremony, the golden afternoon light was so beautiful, we had to take another quick walk!

Then we headed over to Superfine for the after party.

Punta Cana Trash the Dress! Destination Wedding Barcelo Bavaro Dominican Republic

Wedding at Burr Homestead, Fairfield CT & Wesley United Methodist Church, Franklin Square NY

Valerie and Stephen were married on April 13th 2013. The morning started at Valerie's apartment in Brooklyn, NY where she prepared herself for this amazing day with her family and friends. Their joyful ceremony was at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Franklin Square NY. It was a family affair with Stephen's father and Valerie's grandfather playing a part in the service. The bride and groom even got up and sang a few songs together. After the ceremony, they had an adorable cake party before heading off to their reception at Burr Homestead in Fairfield CT. The night ended with a sparkler send-off and Japanese lanterns. It got pretty suspenseful when a few of the lanterns ended up in the huge old trees, but the trees were wet from days of rain, and the lanterns quickly went out. The day was warm and fun from start to finish. Valerie and Steve are all around great people, and I wish them all the best as they walk through life together.

Traditional Bengali Hindu South Asian Wedding at Sanatan Mandir, Queens, NY (About Hindu Weddings)

Amanda and Prashant were married on April 12th, 2013 at Santan Mandir in East Elmhurst, NY, a stone's throw from LaGuardia Airport. It was my first South Asian wedding, and it was amazingly complex and stunning. The colors were bright and rich, and their traditions were extremely moving and beautiful. I've included descriptions of those traditions under the respective picture sets below. It was an experience I will never forget. It was a such a pleasure working with Amanda and Prashant and their friends and families, and I wish them all the happiness in the world!

Baraat Swaagat: The bride's party welcomes the groom's party in front of the mandir.

Parichhan: The bride's mother and other respected married women shower the groom with grains and perform aarti.

Janwaas: The groom is taken to a comfortable area in the mandir and offered refreshments.

Bride's Emli Ghotaaway: (photo set above and the next 9 photo sets) The bride's mother and uncle perform a ceremony under the mandap (wedding shrine) where the bride acknowledges that she is ready to leave home.

Kanyaadaan - Giving the Bride Away: Bride returns to the mandap and sits on the right side of the groom. The bride's parents place her right hand into the right hand of the groom. The groom promises to cherish her forever.

Angihotra: The priest invites the bride and groom to kindle the sacramental fire and make offerings of ghee and mixed herbs.

Bhaawar: The bride and groom circulate the fire seven times making offerings to Agni Dev, the fire god, and asking for the following:

Bride - May the Devas bless me as I enter into a new family. May the Devas bless the groom. May the Devas bless both of us with health, wealth and love for each other. May the Devas grant us true love for each other and fulfill all of our desires.

Groom - May the Devas shower an abundance of blessings on both of us. I am thankful of being given such a beautiful bride. May the Devas less us with wealth, health and prosperity.

Septa-Padi (7 Steps): They now take seven steps together to the northeast. There is a sentiment each time a step is taken.

Saat-Vachan: The bride and groom exchange vows.

Jaimaal & Rings: The bride and groom garland each other. The chant "May all the cosmic power unite our hearts, and as particles of water, once mixed, can never pe separated, even though are hearts may be inseparable." Bride and groom exchange marriage rings - the circular aspect of the ring signifying an un-ending love for each other. (The bride now sits on the left of the groom.)

Bridal Sparsh: They touch each other's heart saying, "I take your heart into your vows. May your mind follow my mind. May you listen to my voice attentively and lovingly, because God has given you to me and me to you to love together in married life"

Sindoor Daan: The goom now applies sindoor to the bride's head. The bride and groom perform this most sacred act in privacy, because this act is only for the two of them to share and cherish.

Assirvaad (Blessing): The priest, parents and other guests join in showering blessings on the bride and groom. (In the top right photo, they are being showered with flower blossoms.)

"Fat Awesome" Wedding at Emmanuel College Chapel and the Woburn Hilton / Boston

Jenna and Jimmy were married on March 23rd 2013! Their ceremony was at the beautiful Emmanuel College Chapel, and they had their reception at the Woburn/Boston Hilton. Both were fantastic venues! Jenna and Jimmy were such a pleasure to work with, super sweet and tons of fun. You may know Jimmy as one of the members of FatAwesome, creators of viral videos like Cat-Friend vs. Dog-Friend and many many more! Jimmy was even filming his bride walking down the aisle on his iPhone! As you would expect, they definitely know how to throw a party, and I had a great time capturing it for them!

Meet Tamara and Edgard! This fun and beautiful couple had their engagement session at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT. I was super excited about it from the start, but I had no idea just how many awesome locations there were here. We only scratched the surface! Doljanchi (Dol) - Traditional Korean First Birthday Party

This past Saturday was little Katrina's Doljanchi or Dol (traditional Korean first birthday party). The highlight of the celebration is letting the little one choose from a set of objects laid out in front of her. What she chooses is said to determine her future. Katrina chose the abacus (twice) which symbolizes intelligence. I can already tell that she's a smart cookie! Despite having a little bit of a cold she was the sweetest little birthday princess!

On December 5th, 2012 I got an email that turned my world upside down.

It was from the bride of one of the weddings I'd recently shot, congratulating me for having my picture (of her hands) featured on the homepage of National Geographic. I had no idea! I submitted that picture, on the prompting of a friend, to the "My Shot" section of their website and then completely forgot about it. Then when I saw it featured on their home page I was in complete shock! I was shaking and weeping like I'd just won Olympic gold!

Design Within Reach (a mehndi design, also known as a henna tattoo)

I've been a National Geographic reader since I was very young, and being in their magazine was something I'd dream about. But as I grew up, reality and practicality replaced old seemingly impossible fantasies -- so when this happened, it struck me so deeply words can't even begin to describe how it felt and how I still feel about it! Needless to say, this is truly the highest honor I have ever received, and I am eternally grateful for having been chosen.

UPDATE: My picture went on to be used as the header for their Valentine's email blast and was chosen as a unit opener in a literature textbook. As you can probably guess, I'm ecstatic!

Pakistani Indian Wedding - Brooklyn NY, Edison NJ, and Mountain Lakes NJ

I had the pleasure of shooting a two-day Pakistani Indian Wedding the weekend after Hurricane Sandy Hit. The Nikkah was held at the Turkish American Eyup Sultan Islamic Center in Brooklyn, NY. It was followed by the Mehndi at the Akbar Banquet Hall in Edison, NJ; and the next day they had their wedding reception at The Villa at Mountain Lakes in Mountain Lakes, NJ. Gas was in short supply and being rationed, and practically no one had power, but somehow they made it come all together for a truly enchanting weekend. This is the wedding of Khalid and Roham, a beautiful story of love in the aftermath.

"Heather was by far our favorite vendor during our wedding. Let me start by saying that our wedding took place just three days after Hurricane Sandy, and Heather managed to make it to all three of our events, all hours and states apart and with a lack of gas in the Tri-State area. She was on time to all the events, even when the bride and groom were late themselves! She took amazing shots of our ceremony and wedding day, images that our friends and family are still in awe over, and even National Geographic who has chosen to feature her image over and over again.

We had two photographers at the wedding, but I always recommend Heather to all of my friends. What I loved about her style the most was that she's not afraid to get right in the thick of the action, mold you to get the perfect shot, and has a keen eye for lighting and scenery. My husband and I were clueless about how to pose, but she made us feel incredibly comfortable and guided us.

Lastly, Heather was always so warm with us, always smiling, which makes the world's difference when you're stressed out on your wedding day. She was such a joy to work with during our wedding and even after. We received the final edits a week later, and we could not have been happier with the pictures. Thank you so much for all your work, Heather!"

Brooklyn Bridge Park + ReBar Wedding, Brooklyn, NY

Kellie and Joaquim were married on June 22nd 2013 (The HeatherLife Photography days) in an intimate and beautiful wedding on Pebble Beach at Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn, NY nestled between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. Then they had a fun reception at reBar in Brooklyn! Despite all the tourists and the loud trains overhead, their wedding was absolutely perfect, and Kellie and Joaquim are an amazing and passionate couple. I had a wonderful time with them, and I wish them a long and happy future together!

Little Feat at The Klein in Bridgeport
